René Kieffer had acquired from his old friend Valdo Barbey, painter of the Navy, 18 copper engravings representing 18 ports of the world.

Determined to publish a text of 4 pages per port, he first contacted Pierre Mac Orlan, then Blaise Cendrars (who would make it the subject of his book 'Bourlinguer') before turning to Claude Farrère, Academician .

A long whimsical cruise from London to Venice via the ports of Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Paris, Rouen, Le Havre, Southampton, Brest, New York, Bordeaux, Bilbao, La Carogne, Marseille, Toulon, Genoa, and Naples.
