Reference work on the History of Theater under the Ancien Régime in the 18th century

Comedy at Court
The royal society theaters during the last century.

What journalist Jean-Jacques Weiss said:

“A certain number of works on the theater have appeared, which deserve, to varying degrees and in various ways, the attention of the public . at court , volume all together of knowledge and luxury"

" The object of the work is to inform us in detail of the history of the company troops which the Duchess of Maine successively formed to Sceaux, Glatigny and Anet, Madame de Pompadour for Versailles and for Bellevue, Marie-Antoinette for Trianon.

M. Jullien gives the state of the personnel of each troupe, the formal description of the scenes in which it played, the details of the performances, and, for Madame de Pompadour, the details of the sums which each theatrical season cost.

It collects all that we could know of the talent of the artists, and especially of the three main artists, the Duchess of Maine, the Marquise de Pompadour and Queen Marie-Antoinette. All mixed with anecdotes, almost always carefully controlled, which do not go beyond the limits of the chosen subject and which are topical for the depiction of court life at Versailles"

And Emile Zola is full of praise for the knowledge of Adolphe Jullien
when he exposed in 1881 his reflection on naturalism in the theater.
