The sinner - Henri de Régnier - Superb mosaic Moroccan binding 1/515 1920
- Henri de Régnier , major writer of his time, academician,
is a poet, a storyteller, a novelist, a playwright.
We owe him some 80 works (more than 50 volumes published in the Mercure de France,
of which he was, in his time, a star writer), speeches, an infinity of literary criticism.
Why be interested in an "old crouton"?
His work ? Precious and lush poems, fantastic tales, novels
all faithfully published under the beautiful pale yellow cover of the Mercure de France.
Proust will pastiche it magnificently, Gide will end up getting angry with him (it must be said
that the author of Les Faux-Monnayeurs had sold at auction 54 books dedicated to him
his "friend" Régnier...) and our monocled leather circle will even go so far as to fight a duel
with the king of dandies, Robert de Montesquiou.
Idol of Proust and Gide, Henri de Régnier is a little overlooked.
Bernard Quiriny brings this precious writer to life with erudition.
The Sinner , love story
- de Séguiran has only one concern, in his castle near Aix en Provence:
have offspring. The Madames de Séguran are virtuous; the first one
unable to provide the much-desired heir leaves a bereaved widower.
But the most cruel is his brother who suspects M. de Séguiran of being incapable of procreating!
With humor and a lot of fine allusions, Henri de Régnier plants characters
colorful in incredible situations. With his precious and precise style,
it amuses and moves until the last scene.
Qualified as a love story, it is placed by its author under the auspices of the moralist
and libertine critic Saint-Evremond
a quote from which appears in the epigraph of the book: "There are times when we mourn the pleasures lost,
times when we mourn the sins committed."
