Description (ph13)
Uncommon edition in Large Paper Delivered with the Engravings of Master Lalauze in Triple Proof.
In an elegant Moroccan binding by Carayon.
Adolphe Lalauze :
Its tender images, often on the register of the tale, and worked on steel with finesse, like thousands of scratches of small needles, earned Lalauze to be often asked to illustrate novels and short stories, in particular for bibliophile works published by Damase Jouaust , and of which he executes the numerous frontispieces.
Alain-Rene Lesage:
It is with the Diable lame that Lesage announces himself as a novelist of the first order. The success of the novel, which was considerable, finally succeeded in distinguishing the name of Lesage from the crowd of writers.
It is a series of examples taken from life that teach the student-spectator about life, its lies, its turpitudes, its deceptive appearances, but also about hope and generosity. Combining fantasy and comedy of manners, Lesage satirizes Parisian society, even if he locates his story in Madrid.
Emile Carayon (1843-1909):
Here is what Octave Uzanne wrote about him in the Artistic and Fanciful Modern Reliance published in 1887 :
Around 1875, a bookbinder of great talent in his style appeared in Paris, M. Carayon, who, breaking with everything that had been done in the genre until then, became a real cardboard maker of art, and composed Levant morocco with a plain back with a corner, of a know-how so complete that one could compare them, for the way in which they are treated, with the most charming full bindings of the masters.
