- The poetess known as Marie de France is the first great female author of French literature. His Lais are tales of adventure and love whose material is drawn from Breton folklore and myths.
- Marie de France is situated in the wake of the poetic Revolution inaugurated by the troubadours, in the 12th century.
The Lays of Mary are notable for their celebration of love, the variation within its collection, and the brilliant description that characterize the literature of the time. There are a number of commonplaces of courtly lyricism, chivalrous values or the arrival of spring.
This Lanval lai is a pure fairy tale. Its hero lives in the mythical time of the Knights of the Round Table, at the court of King Arthur.
- Very nice Art edition, in 2 parts, an adaptation in modern French by Paul Truffau, and the Period Text, printed for the writer Rene Duverne.
