The Romance of the Rose - Manuscript M948 Pierpont Morgan Library - Morocco 1993
Description (ch)
- Facsimile of manuscript M.948 of the romance of the rose (begun by Guillaume de Lorris, continued by Jean de Meung) produced for King Francis I, kept at the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York
(gift of Beatrice Bishop Berle in memory of her father, Cortlandt Field Bishop, in 1972)
Written and illuminated in Rouen around 1525
The text is copied by Girard Acarie from a 1519 edition of Michel le Noir.
The Renaissance saw a renewed interest in this medieval "bestseller" by adding the first literary analyses.
- Accompanied by a volume of comments by Margareta Friesen (German art historian)
Translated by Sylvie Jacques and preceded by a study by Georges Duby, and followed by a notebook of photos by David A. Loggie.
