• Jules Vallès, the ruralist writer: a "rebel through and through" but not an anarchist, a fervent supporter of "the Social" while keeping his distance from socialist parties, concerned with realism but hostile to naturalism, he remains decidedly "on the margins" of the schools and currents of his time.

• Jules Vallès dedicates his chronicle and autobiographical novel L’Insurgé (The Insurgent) to the Parisian people who, at the beginning of 1871, proclaimed the Paris Commune in response to a catastrophic political and social situation.

The final novel of the Jacques Vingtras trilogy presents itself as a chronicle-testimony of these few bloody weeks, experienced from the inside by the author.
