Daniel Pennac has retained from his childhood a nostalgia for home and a tenderness for one’s chosen family. While his writing is humorous and full of unbridled imagination, Pennac can also write Better Than Life, an essay on active, lucid, and enthusiastic pedagogy in which he presents what he calls "The Inalienable Rights of the Reader."

Hence Pennac's audience: children, adolescents, and average readers who are put off by academic criticism or specialized reading. Better Than Life criticizes heavy commentary and asserts the reader's right to intervene anarchically (including at school)—the right to skip pages, not finish a book, and reread favorite passages indefinitely, to gambol through the story and talk about it freely to increase the pleasure.
