Description (ch)

  • Very nice bibliophile edition in a binding created by the binding artist Anne Giordan.

Renowned bookbinder who practiced in Ittenheim near Strasbourg from 1986 to 2020,

having participated in numerous exhibitions and obtained numerous

prizes including in 2010 the prize for the second gold folder (binding competition

decorated crafts organized by the Librairie Blaizot).

His portrait was made in the review Arts et Métiers of the book n°270.

"The artist for each binding tries to express through his experience and sensitivity

the perceived meaning of the text, its interpretation. For each work, reinvent the material, unique, unpredictable and new" .

  • "Considerations on the causes of the greatness of the Romans and their decline" by Montesquieu (1689-1755) Founder of modern political science

At the antipodes of a picturesque fresco retracing the tumultuous history of the Roman Empire

on the theme of grandeur and decadence, these Considerations and Reflections are well

rather texts of political reflection:

Montesquieu, by a limpid and lapidary argument which ignores the anecdote, brings out here

principles of historical analysis of a singular topicality. By weighing the respective influence of

men and institutions, mores and techniques, he extracts from history what is truly

essential, which determines the course of events: on the monument of ancient history rises a

of the first manifestations of political science .

This work is of great importance from a historiographical point of view, because it has contributed to structuring

later the chronology in major periods: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance and Early modern times.
