These forgotten poets: François Coppée

His first collection, Le Reliquaire (1866), established him as one of the pillars of the Parnassians, an artistic movement that valued restraint, impersonality, and form, in opposition to the subjective and sentimental lyricism of romanticism. He quickly moved towards poetry of everyday life with his second collection, Les intimités, in 1868, and at the same time wrote successful plays.

A sensitive and realistic poet, capable of evoking nature ("La Mort des oiseaux") as well as life in the capital's streets ("À Paris, en été"), François Coppée is described by some as the poet of the humble. While the meter of his texts is perfect, the emotion expressed is sometimes on the verge of sentimental cliché: "His poetry was like his very person, familiar and cordial," explained his contemporary Henri Chantavoine, while highlighting the author's great popularity at the time.

After working at the Senate library, François Coppée worked as archivist for the Comédie Française from 1878 to 1884, the year he was elected to the Académie française, which led him to retire from all public duties.
