Sayonara - James Michener - Superb Binding Original Edition 1954 1/200
Beautiful bibliophilic work in first edition well bound.
Translated into more than fifty languages, the books of James Michener
have sold hundreds of millions of copies worldwide.
Sent by the Navy to the Pacific, he returned from his travels with the South Pacific,
which won him the Pulitzer Prize in 1948.
Interested in politics, James Michener had campaigned
for the election of John Kennedy in 1960.
During the Korean War, it was forbidden for Americans stationed in Japan
to marry Japanese women. The novel Sayonara tells the story of two forbidden loves.
Set in the early 1950s, it tells the story of Major Gruver,
a soldier stationed in Japan, who falls in love with Hana-Ogi, a Japanese woman.
The novel follows their cross-cultural Japanese romance and illuminates the racism of the post-war period.
Sayonara was adapted into a film of the same name in 1957
directed by Joshua Logan and featuring Marlon Brando .
